Stainless steel head and handle, so it will not rust
92cm (36 in) head on a 173cm (69 in) handle
Fills dips and takes bumps down in one pass
Two-piece handle with a locking pin, no tools needed
About this product
Level the lumps and dips in your lawn without lifting the turf.
A stainless steel lawn lute with a 92cm (36 in) head on a 173cm (69 in) handle, for spreading top dressing flat.
A lawn lute spreads top dressing so it settles level. Drag it back and forth and the head pushes sand or soil into the low spots and scrapes the high spots down, which an ordinary rake does badly.
The 92cm head covers more ground on each pass and has the longer handle, so it suits larger lawns, taller users and trade work.
Top dressing only fixes an uneven lawn if it ends up level. Spread with a garden rake it sits in ridges, and the grass grows back bumpy in the places you were trying to fix.
The lute head is a flat frame of bars. Pull it across the dressing and it fills the hollows and shaves the humps in the same stroke. The three inner bars are open on top, so they catch small stones and twigs while the front and rear bars clear off any extra.
Both the head and the handle are stainless steel. Many cheaper lutes only use stainless on the head. A fully stainless tool can stay out in the rain and still take hard work like spreading gravel.
The handle comes in two pieces and locks into the head with a pin, so it goes together in minutes without tools and comes apart again to store.

It spreads and levels loose material. Most people use it to work top dressing (sand, soil or a mix) into a lawn so the dips fill and the bumps come down. It also levels topsoil before turf or seed, and spreads gravel, sand or pebbles on paths and driveways.
What sizes do you sell?
Two. The 77cm (30 in) head comes on a 142cm (56 in) handle and costs £104.97. The 92cm (36 in) head comes on a 173cm (69 in) handle and costs £117.97. Both heads are 25cm (10 in) deep.
Which size should I choose?
The 77cm is easier to steer around beds, paths and small gardens. The 92cm covers more ground on each pass and has the longer handle, so it suits bigger lawns and taller users. Landscapers and greenkeepers tend to pick the 92cm.
What is it made of?
Stainless steel. Both the head and the handle are stainless, not just the head, so it does not rust when left out in the wet and it stands up to spreading gravel and stones.
How is the head built?
The head has three inner bars plus a front and rear bar, braced at each end. The inner bars are open at the top so they catch small stones and twigs, and the front and rear bars push any extra material off.
How heavy is it?
The 77cm weighs about 3.6kg and the 92cm about 4kg. That is heavy enough to break up small clods and light enough to pull back and forth for a long session.
Does it need tools to put together?
No. The handle comes in two pieces and locks into the head with a pin. It goes together and comes apart in a few minutes with no tools, so it stores easily in a small shed.
How do I use it?
Tip your top dressing onto the lawn in small heaps. Then push and pull the lute back and forth across the grass. The head drags the material into the low spots and scrapes the high spots down. Keep going until you can see the grass tips through the dressing.
How short should the grass be before I top dress?
Cut it short first. Top dressing settles into a short lawn and gets lost in a long one, and the lute glides more easily over short grass.
Will it damage my grass?
Used flat on the lawn, it slides over the grass and moves the dressing rather than tearing the turf. Do not dig the edge in. Let the weight of the head do the work.
What materials can I spread with it?
Sand, topsoil, compost, a top dressing mix, fertiliser, mulch, gravel and pebbles. It also breaks up small clods of sand or loam and pulls stones out of soil.
Can I use it before laying turf?
Yes. Run it over the soil to get a smooth, even bed first. A level base is what stops new turf settling into dips later.
Is it good for golf greens and sports pitches?
It is used for that kind of upkeep, including greens and cricket pitches, where an even surface matters. The 92cm is the usual choice for larger areas.
Can I use it on a driveway or path?
Yes. It spreads and levels gravel, pebbles and sand, and it is handy for levelling a base before laying slabs or a shed.
Does it work on all types of grass?
It works on any lawn you can top dress, as it moves the material, not the grass. That includes the ryegrass and fescue lawns common in the UK.
Is it suitable for home gardeners as well as professionals?
Yes. Most buyers use it on their own lawns, while landscapers and groundskeepers use the same tool for work.
Is there a warranty?
Yes, the store gives a 1 year limited warranty. This is on top of your legal rights, which it does not replace.
How much is delivery?
Delivery is free on every order, to the UK, Ireland and most other countries. There is no extra charge at checkout.
How quickly will it arrive?
Orders are normally sent within 24 hours by DHL. Delivery to the UK and Ireland usually takes 2 to 3 working days. Rural areas and holidays can add a little time.
Will I get a tracking number?
Yes. You get an email with a DHL tracking number once your order is sent. If it does not arrive, check your junk folder and then contact us.
Do you deliver outside the UK and Ireland?
Yes, free, to most countries. Europe usually takes 2 to 3 working days, and the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand 5 to 7. If we cannot ship to your country we will contact you and refund you in full.
How do I pay?
You can pay by card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express) through Stripe, or with PayPal. We never see your full card number.
Is the price on the page the price I pay?
Yes. The price shown is the price at checkout, with free delivery to the UK and Ireland. It only goes down if you have a valid discount code.
Can I change my mind after ordering?
Yes. You can cancel within 14 days of receiving it, for any reason. See our refunds and returns page for how to send it back and when you get your money.
What if it arrives damaged or faulty?
Contact us as soon as you can and send photos. Under the Consumer Rights Act you can reject a faulty item within 30 days for a full refund. After that we will repair or replace it.
Are both sizes the same quality?
Yes. They are the same design in the same stainless steel. Only the head width, handle length and weight differ.
Can I buy more than one?
Yes. Change the quantity in the basket. For larger trade orders, contact us first.
How do I store it?
Pull the locking pin and take the handle apart. The two pieces and the head lie flat, so they fit in a small shed or garage.
How should I clean it?
Hose off soil and sand after use and let it dry. Stainless steel does not need oiling.

How to level a lawn with a lawn lute
3 min readLevel Lawn UK
When to top dress
Spring and early autumn are the best times, when the grass is growing and can push up through the dressing. Avoid hot, dry spells and frozen ground.
What you need
A lawn lute
Top dressing: sand, sieved soil, or a mix
A wheelbarrow and spade
A mower
Step by step
Mow the lawn short.
If the lawn is compacted, spike it with a fork first so the dressing can get in.
Tip the dressing onto the lawn in small heaps spread across the area.
Push and pull the lute back and forth over each heap. Work in two directions to spread it evenly.
Stop when you can see the tips of the grass through the dressing. Do not bury the grass.
Water lightly if the weather is dry.
Deeper dips
Fill a deep hollow in stages. Add a thin layer, let the grass grow through, then add more a few weeks later. A thick layer in one go can smother the grass underneath.
